[Catching up on re-posting. This was huge news a few weeks ago that many may have missed. On a different note, I’ll be moving my blog to Substack soon. Looking for any feedback on approaches you’ve liked on that platform. Email me at andrew@eco-strategies.com if you have thoughts.]
Big energy and climate milestone.
In the first half of 2025, globally, renewables generated more electricity than coal — and basically all the new demand was met by solar and wind.
Coal and gas use actually FELL.
Let’s finally kill the myth that China and India “aren’t doing anything”. Electricity from fossil fuels dropped in both countries (while the U.S., shocker, went a bit backward).
This has been building for years. We’re deep into exponential curve territory – plummeting costs, massive production, and deployment at scale.
Yes, there are caveats:
* What about renewables vs. ALL fossils? Sure, but renewables generated 34% of global electricity this year and will continue taking share quickly.
* It’s not fast enough. Agreed. Absolute emissions need to drop, but meeting ALL new demand globally with clean power is the crucial first step.
* What about AI energy demand? Clearly a potential problem. But previous forecasts of energy armageddon for data centers never materialized (see optimistic paper from Amory Lovins in the comments).
There’s still a long way to go on climate.
But let’s take a win, folks.
